Yes, the initial idea was to read it all, but he really hadn't the will. Anyway, he succeded in reading that chapter negligently, with one eyes closed because it was tired (the eye, yep). And that allowed him to know that the main character of the book, doing his weird walk, met a nihilistic girl in a wood. That sounded familiar. Maybe there really was some similarities with his life and the book he was reading. Anyway, time to read the second chapter. But first, something came to his mind: what the cornfield was about? If the story was about a man walking around (and about a girl, yes, but which function currently seems unknown), what the cornfield is? Something to discover. This led him to obtain a bit more interest in reading the second chapter.
In the second chapter, the man stopped for a moment and asked himself: "Why am I still here in my city? I should go out.". Basically, he decided to travel.
